As much as the Japanese were exposed to jungles on Guadalcanal, their own reports refer to their getting lost in the jungle and failing to present for battles. Also, after losing their rations to hungry USMCs, they tended to starve. Jungle fighting incorporates "jungle subsistence."

I've begun reading a first edition book, pub. 1946, title The Old Burma Road by Doctor Neville Bradley, a Medical Missionary in China. It's his diary of his 'journey on foot and muleback' in 1930. Included are several photos. The Japanese has already bombed his medical centre in Yunnan-Fu /Kunming. Great resource book but I can find no reference to it online.

Thanks Mitch for this wonderful article. My father, who passed away in Fairfax, Virginia in 1997, was the Foreign Secretary of the INA government in Burma. I grew up listening to stories of Subhas Chandra Bose and my father's interactions with him. My father regarded Bose as a true Indian patriot and he felt to his last days that if Bose would have led India after independence, we would have had a more corruption-free, united India than the one we have now. National character, my father used to say, inevitably is born in the crucible of armed struggle and sacrifice. He was sent to prison by the British in Burma.

My Grandfather, Roy E. Beddingfield was attached to the Chinese "Y" Forces, as Light Weapons Instructor. He retired in 1966, as Sergent Major. Finding out anything about the Chinese Infantry Training Center, Kunming China(I suspect this is where he was) is next to impossible. Anything from Anyone would be greatly appreciated.

My grandfather described Bill Slim as one of the greatest men he had ever encountered, and Orde Wingate as a bit of a madman. He was with the Chindits and told stories of sleeping in nets, burning leeches off with cigarettes, sleeping with a piece of string tied from your wrist to the wrist of the person next to you, setting up a perimeter with booby traps of some sort I asumme maybe cordite, snakes that hung from trees and went for your eyes, scorpions in peoples boots, airdrops that went to the Japanese instead of our forces, hot sweaty inhospitable conditions, malaria, dyssentry etc, these men did incredible things that noone is ever likely to have to repeat and deserve all our admiration and respect.

My grandad who recently passed away was a Sergeant Major with the Royal Engineers and landed at Morib beach, among his possessions we recently inherited was a map of Port Swettenham that he obviously must have kept since then. I would be very interested if you could expand slightly on any aspect of his involvement. He spent 3 and a half years in Burma, was at Kohima, was with the Chindits for a time, was involved in the retreat which I know shamed him to his dying day and also the subsequent reconquest of both Singapore and Burma. I believe he helped build what was at the time the longest floating (pontoon ?) bridge in the world at the time which they perhaps later destroyed, maybe it was another bridge. He was a qualified sharpshooter and commanded approx 240 men a mixture of Indians, Gurkhas, Tamils and Burmese mostly, perhaps with some Brits too. He was mentioned twice in dispatches back in the UK but refused to ever tell us what for. We also have a Japanese flag which is charred and full of bullet holes from the battle of Kohima I believe though he also spoke of the Admin Box battle, and a samurai sword presented to him from Mountbatten. When the war ended he stayed behind for over a year, being among those that liberated the prisoners at Changi jail and ferrying Japanese pow's to Penang island, then assisting in the rebuild of the devastated Singapore. Actually saw the movie. It's called "Sea Wolves" and is similiar to "Guns of Navarone". Funny thing is most people can recognize "Guns of Navarone" which is a fictional movie. I prefer movies based on real history. I give the movie "Sea Wolves" a thumbs up and a chip chip cherreeo to the true heroes of history.

My father was one of the 82 left standing and was invalided out - he weighed 6 stone and was airlifted to a field hospital in Assam because they thought he wouldn't survive the trip back to India. He went back in with General Slim and the Chindits after 6 months R&R. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about the survivors. He had some very harrowing tales.

My father, Lt. Pratt A Warren was part of the corps of troop trainers in Kunming in 1944 and 45. Have you ever come across his name?

He was awarded a medal by General Stillwell in 1945 I think. Please let me know if you have any information on him. He retired in 1961 as a Lt. Colonel and died in 1974 and was buried at Arlington cemetary w/ full honors.

Nethaji died in india Gumnami Baba died on 16 September 1985 at Faizabad's. He was cremated at popular the picnic spot, on the bank of River Saryu.
Nethaji lived as a sanyasi in the name of Bhagwanji or 'Gumnami Baba', who lived in the house Ram Bhawan in Faizabad.

i'm writing in regard to my father,PFC.Max A.Little,he was a crew member on a C-47 transport,3rd air cargo resupply squadron, where he served as a radio operator,he arrived in the C.B.I. march 1945 until feb 1946. He passed away last December and i have very limited information concerning his time in the service,I would like any information i can gather,and was wondering why a patch with a 10 and wings(10th div.) is on the left shoulder and a Flying tiger with a star between its wings (14th div.)is on the right shoulder.Why the 2 divisions?
